Olivia Rodrigo recently released her hit album “Sour.” With 280 million streams, the album has become the biggest debut of the year. However, Courtney Love has accused Rodrigo of copying “the concept” of Holes’ album “Live Through This.”
Love claimed that Rodrigo “stole” the cover image concept. A better fitting word would be “inspired.” Hole’s album art likely inspired Rodrigo and the photographer when it came about shooting time. She later claimed that she loved “Live Through This.”
Via Twitter, Love explained that she was not angry. However, she did convey quite a bit of emotion over the fact that Rodrigo did not simply ask before shooting. “It was rude of her and Geffen not to ask myself of Ellen von Unwerth,” the photographer who shot the Hole album cover.
On Facebook, Love called attention to Rodrigo’s album “Sour” being produced by the same label as Live Through This.
“Stealing an original idea and not asking permission is rude,” She wrote. “There’s no way to [be] elegant about it. I’m not angry. It happens all the time to me. And [usually] I’m very gracious or say nothing. But this was bad form.”
Rodrigo responded to Love’s Instagram post, saying, “Love u and live through this sooooo much.”
Others implied Rodrigo copied her overall aesthetic, including the prom nods, from the indie rock band Pom Pom Squad.
