The Midnight Devils are a trio covered in glitter from head to toe crafted in the bloody heavens. The glam nerds put out their debut album in 2018 and have been touring ever since – having to stop recently due to COVID. The album, ‘Something Bigger‘ is spine-tingling, thrilling, and elegantly ear-shattering. At the moment, the group is working on their sophomore release and will be recording with Chip Z’Nuff in Chicago as soon as they get “the all-clear.”
The album opens with masses of energy. Their glittery appearance nearly seems to bleed through their vocals. I massively enjoyed the opener’s stomping rhythm and catching lyrics. The music video for ‘Pink Halo’ is visually satisfying, showcasing the group’s flamboyant look. It wraps up exactly what the band is about in a darkly pleasant four minutes.
Though ‘Pink Halo‘ is brilliant, I enjoy ‘By My Side‘ significantly more. It was genius, and flawless, and outrageous. The song made my heart skip alongside the deadly backbeat. And sooner or later, I was singing along with Sam. The guitar solos are beautifully sickening and energetically and heavily graceful. The group has immense talent.
‘Baptized By the Radio’ makes the album ten times better than it was before. Again, brilliant opening by the shredding guitarist. I relate to the song strongly as rock has formed the thing I am today. The piece touches on being “molded” by the radio and making it as a rock musician. “Wild animals roaming the streets/ Living out their rock and roll fantasies.”
I truly don’t think I’ve raved about it enough, but I am bloody in love with the guitarist. Sniper provides this heaviness and unleashed feel to the album. While Sam gives off a comfortingly dark sound. And drummer Jimmy Mess creates an utterly compelling backbeat that’s packed with consistent energy. To see them live would be terrifyingly astounding.
The album closes with ‘No More, ‘ perhaps the very strongest of the track. I just felt it. A name popped into my head as the lyrics said, “Things have changed/ Things were different/ Now I’m not gonna be putting up with your lies.” They go on reading, “I’m going to the top.” Relating to listeners is the bloody strongest aspect of rock. They hit that nail on the head. “I’m going straight to the top with or without you.” To wrap it up, the song screams, “I’m done with your bullshit,” and at least one-time, you’ve been done with someone’s bullshit.
Overall, the album was an amazing experience filled with loads of glitter. Despite how broad the genre is, any fan of rock needs to check out this band. As for The Midnight Devils, I can not wait to hear what they have coming for us.
