1994 was a pretty horrible year for music in general, not only rock. We lost Kurt Cobain, and Justin Bieber was born.
All jokes aside, it’s been 27 years since Kurt Cobain’s tragic death. I use “death” instead of “suicide” because there have been so many new theories that it’s hard to decipher. Cobain’s case was closed as “suicide” because it was the only investigation approach. Now years later, we look back, thinking about the things that we seemed to miss. The legend’s death appears to be more sinister.
April 5th, 1994, Cobain left Exodus recovery center. Courtney Love reported him missing because she was “worried” about his “suicidal” thoughts. She hired a private investigator Tom Grant who later realized she had been excessively and “wrongly” painting Cobain as suicidal. But ultimately, Rosemary Caroll, Love’s entertainment attorney, confirmed that “Cobain wasn’t suicidal.”
Love called the police pretending to be Cobain’s mother. And later, she explained that she believed they wouldn’t take her seriously if she called as “herself.” It was all one large diversion, according to Grant. However, it wasn’t played very well.
To the press, Love painted herself to be extremely worried. To private investigator Grant, she slipped a handful of times. “The woman I was dealing with seemed to be an unbelievable opportunist, obsessed more with promoting her own career than actually finding her “suicidal” husband,” claimed Grant.
Before finding Cobain, she was talking loads about her music career. The following lines from her taped call with Grant, were concerning to him. “All publicity is good publicity,” she said while talking about the press and her new record. She also said Cobain’s disappearance “might even help sell records.”
Love told the press that Cobain’s “suicide” note read, “I can’t live my life like this anymore.” However, it turned out none of which was in there at all. And despite Love working on forging handwriting, she did a horrible job turning Cobain’s note announcing the bands break up into a “goodbye” to herself and their daughter. Pieces of paper like the image below show Love copying someone’s handwriting.

Even if Love hadn’t added the writing, it doesn’t prove to be a suicide note. He even talked about divorcing Love before he was allegedly murdered.
It was also believed that Love was assisted by an ex-boyfriend (and large heroin addict), Michael Dewitt. He was the last person to see Cobain alive. From what I understand, Dewitt was at the home where Cobain had died within the days that it happened. And following his death, when asked about the green room (where Cobain died), he claimed he had no idea what it was. However, earlier, when asked by Grant, he explained it was a small room above the garage.
Tom Grant points to the masses of morphine flowing through Cobain’s blood (as heroin turns to morphine once it enters the bloodstream). Cobain’s body was triple the maximum lethal dose to a serve addict. Grant pointed this out because, with that much heroin in his body, he couldn’t have lifted the Model 11 20-gauge shotgun to his mouth to pull the trigger. On that thought, there were no fingerprints on the gun or the letter. Suggesting Love (or Dewitt) wiped their handprints off before leaving.
Kurt Cobain’s credit card made a purchase the day he died. Someone bought a plane ticket back to Seattle for three days until Cobain’s body was found. Grant believes that this was Dewitt going back home after killing Cobain.
Grant also remarked Love to be too nervous during phone calls. After Grant publicly accused her of killing Cobain, she called him sounding timid, stumbling over her words, and switching bits of her story.
Tom Grant finds the whole situation concerning due to the mass amount of 200 similar murders painted to be suicides that followed. Perhaps, Nirvana fans just couldn’t live without Kurt Cobain. However, there was one instance Eldon Hole (El Duce) reflected on. He claimed that Love asked him to “blow” off the head of her “old man” because he was getting on her nerves. He was also told to make it look like a suicide.
It’s unclear what exactly happened to Kurt Cobain. I’m not pointing fingers, nor am I rushing to conclusions. It’s all quite confusing, and I’m not going to be the one standing here telling you what to believe or what happened because truth be told I don’t know what happened.
