Solo artist Evan Gray released his album “It Ends Tomorrow” earlier this year.
The LP is full of guitar anthems with catchy hooks and riffs. It has almost a pleasant brassiness. “It Ends Tomorrow” is a very pop-infused album with a pretty straightforward inspiration or meaning. With a quite gloomy feel, Gray’s work also feels very comfortable.
“I was inspired to write this album mainly by the band ‘Broke in China.’ I work with them closely and helped with their first album and their upcoming second album as well. They inspired me to fully scrap and re-write the album from the ground up after spending time in the studio with them and really coming to grips with what I wanted out of my music,” Gray wrote.
My first observation was that the intros to all of these songs are so powerful and addictive that, despite being so different, each one draws you in and keeps you invested in his music. I especially enjoy the many guitar lines. Running 34 minutes and with 12 different tracks, Gray provides lots to obsess over.
Some of my favorites have to be “Maybe,” “Problem,” and “Dead Eyes”. Each one is unique and a very interesting listen. However, they all begin quite similarly with a pleasant acoustic hook.”Problem,” the first track after the intro, actually begins with an upbeat rhythm and a foot-stomping backbeat—a great welcome to the album.
“The few days before recording the song, I was unable to sing due to nasal congestion and getting down to the wire and up to that morning I still wasn’t able to sing. however by some miracle the song was able to come together and after many many takes we were able to get the vocals down,” Gray explained.
“Using words to cut me first,” Gray sings mid-way through “Dead Eyes,” a song about a tricky relationship – a theme we see throughout the album like in an earlier song, “Lucid Ends.” The 7th track is “about domestic abuse that shows the unfortunate reality behind the life of someone stuck in an abusive relationship.”
“Can only help if you let me in” has to be one of my favorite lines by Gray. “Lucid Ends” is a lovely track with great vocals and an immeasurable theme.
Overall, each song is an amazing anthem. The vocals are confident and bold in their delivery. A fantastic and original album from a clearly very talented artist, it stands out from the crowd!
