3 Exits To Hattiesburg put out their sophomore album ‘Nevermore‘ in 2020. The group has won the 2018 SLM Best Local Band Award and toured the US East Coast in 2019 on the Runaways Tour. They also hosted their own festival in 2016 and again in 2018. The trio has extreme chemistry considering they’ve been close since – the now college students were in – third grade. They pull strong influence from bands like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and Blink-182. Their album was nothing sort of energetic, musically genius, and innovative.
“Over the past five years, we’ve had some exciting moments,” Benny (guitarist and vocalist) said before talking about the festival they hosted.
When I asked about what they have been recently listening to, they responded saying, “Our music tastes are fairly vast. Benny has recently been listening to bands like My Chemical Romance and The Used, as well as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Adam listens to bands like Movements.”
The album opens with ‘Go Fix Yourself,’ which gives me large 2000s rock vibes. And at some point in the song, it felt very much similar to dance-punk with its upbeat rhythm. Throughout the album, I can see quite clearly similarities between 3 Exits and Blink 182—a band from which they find inspiration.
I massively enjoyed ‘Witching Hour,’ the second song of the track. Musically the piece was solid. I played the first thirty seconds of the song repeatedly; it felt recognizable and sounded nothing sort of brilliant; it made my forearms break out in goosebumps. The piece was dreadfully innovative.
‘Rage’ is by far the strongest of the track. It was everything punk, having a perfect balance throughout the instruments. The guitarist provided a wholly brilliant musical feel. From the opening to the ending, it was full of energy. I dig the sheer talent of Benny (vocalist/guitarist) and bassist Fadencio. They are stunning as their skill collides. And watching the drummer Adam perform was intensely entertaining, from his facial expressions to the show he put on. He went bloody hard.
‘Tequila and Cigarettes‘ is light and airy, almost comforting. However, there’s still that distinctive punk clasp. The piece was enjoyable from the middle to the end. It had that flowy, elegant punk rock feel that is particularly apparent in 70s rock. I dug the song.
Generally, I enjoyed the sound of the band. I dug their shredding guitarist, hard-hitting drummer, and gleaming bassist, Fidencio.
