REVIEW: Daddy

While searching for new bands to reach out to, I stumbled across The Shedonist, a band fronted by Persian-American singer/songwriter Jasmin. While listening to both their covers and their previously released singles, I instantly fell in love with their innovative sound.

Inspired by legends like Heart, Fleetwood Mac, and Soundgarden, they have a more rugged/sharp feel. They lightly dip their toes into a stoner rock sense. The group has loads of technical skills being able to cover pop and acoustic songs while also create their own completely rocking singles.

Their covers are pure magic. Being able to sing someone else’s song is one type of talent. On the other hand, to create your music from lyrics to harmonies and melodies, from bass lines to a backbeat, takes an entirely different amount of skill. Shedonist made it look easy. Their previous single, “Five Minutes,” set up their ideal LP due this year. The single is a “female sexual empowerment” piece you can find here

The newly released piece “Daddy” was put out just seven days ago. It starts with some defiant guitar lines that nearly force you to air strum alongside. There are also loads of exciting drum portions. And as you listen just a little closer, the bass and lead guitarist have various energetic sparks going on in the background. Jasim ties together the package with her amazing voice. The layers mold together perfectly.

Despite the single sounding extremely high quality, Jasmin had told me that they “recorded all our new music ourselves in our tiny practice space – we had to have the AC off for the noise, and it got so sweaty.” At one point, the group’s drummer, Conor, stuck his head in the freezer “to avoid dying!!!”

The group’s bassist provides not only compelling bass lines but also kick-ass cover art. Written by frontwoman Jasmin Toubi, the single is bold. I really love their sound. It’s got some dark tones with Jasmin’s vocals. Her voice blew me away, being spun into something completely unique.

Their single is available everywhere. As of the alleged upcoming LP, I’m beyond excited.
