As evidenced by the fact that their recent cover of Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” made it onto Loudwire’s list of the 35 Best Rock + Metal Cover Songs of 2022, the alt-rock duo Nova Twins are swiftly establishing themselves as the go-to source for dynamic remakes this year.
They’re back with an equally fascinating and accurate rendition of the viral phenomenon “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras.
The first recording of the popular song, Gloria, was released in September 2022 as the album’s second single by Will Smith. It swiftly climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart and received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, as reported by Variety. It naturally became a major hit on TikTok as well.
Therefore, it makes sense that Nova Twins chose to attempt it for their debut remix.
The vocalist/guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia South state in the song’s press release: “When we heard ‘Unholy,’ we thought it was such a banger that we had to remix it! It’s a seductive, dark song that brings to mind the well-known and beloved R&B sound of the 2000s. The original’s powerful beat and percussion propel the song and beg for some massive riffs and screaming in the Nova style!
They do, in fact, bring a lot of intensity and flair to the table. The Nova Twins’ interpretation adds loud drums, guttural singing, and other typically violent timbres, whereas Petras and Smith’s cut fits squarely into the pop and EDM camps. At the very conclusion, some hip-hop verses and drums are used to create a brief burst of nu metal.
Notably, Supernova, the duo’s most recent album, was included in Loudwire’s list of the 50 Best Rock + Metal Albums of 2022. The single “Cleopatra,” from the album, was included in Loudwire’s selection of the 50 Best Rock + Metal Songs of 2022. It is obvious that Nova Twins are equally skilled at writing original classics.
